Biographical/Historical note
This collection contains the official report on Detroit's low income housing project called Parkside Homes. The report was compiled by Dr. Charles K. Hyde of Wayne State University for the Historic American Buildings Survey. Located at the corner of Connor and East Warren avenue on Detroit's east side, Parkside Homes was one of the earliest federal housing projects built in Detroit. During the 1930's economic depression, Detroit's housing construction had virtually stopped, yet the city's population continued to grow, especially with the advent of the Second World War. The project, with additions, was completed in 1940 and provided much needed low income housing. The Parkside Homes project was seen as a companion to the public housing project called Brewster Homes. Brewster Homes was "built in the Hastings Street slum clearance area and would be occupied exclusively by African-American families." The Parkside Homes project was designed as a "white housing project," for a "white neighborhood." The story of Detroit's public housing and the Parkside Homes project is an introduction to the history of race relations in Detroit.
