Biographical/Historical note

Walter R. Greene Jr. was born in Detroit on February 3, 1917, son of Walter R. Greene Sr. and Virtie Wilson Greene. He was a graduate of the Detroit Institute of Technology and received his master's degree in Political Science from the University of Detroit. In 1941, Mr. Greene married Freida Bailey; they had two sons. In 1942, Mr. Greene volunteered for Officer Candidate School and became a Second Lieutenant. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and in Germany during the Korean War. He continued to serve as a reservist in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Major in 1965. Mr. Greene was very active in all aspects of government. He was employed by the Michigan Fair Practices Commission, U.S. Department of Defense, Michigan Civil Rights Commission and served as Chief Executive Assistant to Detroit Mayor Roman S. Gribbs. He retired in 1984 from the National Bank of Detroit as Vice President of Civic and Urban Affairs. His interests and activities were many and varied. Mr. Greene served on boards of directors and/or trustees for colleges, hospitals, cultural institutions, foundations and institutions. He was Moderator of the Presbytery of Detroit, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Cancer Foundation, Chairman of the International Freedom Festival and of the Michigan Civil Service Commission. Walter R. Greene died on April 7, 1992, while attending a meeting of the American Automobile Association in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mr. Greene was a member/director/supporter of many organizations, from Alma College to the YMCA. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Michigan Cancer Foundation; General Chairman, Detroit Area Council, Boy Scouts of America; Vice-President, Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan. He was a board member of the Detroit Institute of Arts Founders Society, United Foundation, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Pershing Rifles and Salvation Army. He was awarded the Mercy Medallion for humanitarianism from Mercy College in 1983.
