Abstract
Ms. Schermerhorn was the society editor for The Detroit Times during her teen years. She began working for the News in 1955. She was a society columnist for 24 years. Ms. Schermerhorn was the first female back page columnist for The Detroit News. She later wrote for The Sunday Magazine. She was appointed book editor of The Sunday News in November of 1974. In the late 1970s, Ms. Schermerhorn retired. The records in this collection were created while Ms. Schermerhorn wrote for The Detroit Gazette The Grosse Pointe News, The Detroit Times, and The Detroit News. The correspondence and other materials relate primarily to written responses pertaining to articles written by Ms. Schermerhorn. The period covered is from 1919 until 1965. The correspondence in this collection pertains to reactions regarding articles and requests for publicity for organizations and individuals. This correspondence documents in part the day to day written activity related to Ms. Schermerhorn's professional life. This material includes, photographs, negatives, glass plates, manuscripts, press releases, postcards, booklets, pamphlets, directories, telegrams, letters, greeting cards and invitations. This collection has several booklets pertaining to the writings of Carl Sandburg written by Alan Jenkins. It contains numerous newspaper clippings about The United National Clothing Collection, Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company, Detroit Yacht Club, Mercy College, and Women's Golf It contains an assortment (not inclusive) of volumes of The American Observer which date from September 17, 1934 - May 13, 1935. The correspondence in this collection reflects the interaction between columnist and reader.
