Biographical/Historical note
Born in Lodz, Poland, she emigrated to Detroit, about 1913, after her father, Edward Zielinski, a Polish actor, had settled here and started Teatr Rozmaitosci (the Variety Theatre). In 1916, she married Antoni Hahrowski. Two sons were born of this union: Julius, in 1917; and Witold (Victor) in 1920. The marriage was dissolved in 1934.Her affiliation with the Polish stage was less prominent than her father's role; it became a vehicle for her students in her plays. She appeared rarely on the stage and then as a kindly grandmother. She is noted for establishing schools for the completion or perfection of the Polish language, history and culture. She stressed Polish awareness among her students, when the trend opposed any ethnic identity. For forty-three years she conducted her Saturday and evening classes, from elementary to intermediate levels, and summer caps where students arrived from all over Michigan. She taught in various fraternal lodges, schools and libraries in Detroit, and also in Wyandotte, Warren, Flint, Saginaw and Jackson with little financial support. Her purpose was single-minded, and no hardship deterred her from her goal. She died on August 28, 1983. (from B.M.) (blue index cards)
