- This collection consists of financial record books of the company's second phase of business, post-prohibition.
Biographical/Historical note
In 1873, two German-Americans, August Ekhardt and Herman Becker, formed a partnership to enter the brewing business in Detroit, first located at 244 Russell St. In 1891, it merged with City Brewing Company, operated by Federick Fulda and August Kayser, and built a new brewery at Orleans and Winder St. The brewery dismantled in 1918 with national prohibition, but revived on May 1, 1933 with the repeal of prohibition, and built a new brewery in 1935 at the same site as the old plant at Riopelle and Winder. LeRoy Payne became company president in 1938. In 1952, Ekhardt and Becker absorbed Schmidt Brewery, and was itself acquired in 1962 by Pfeiffer as part of the newly formed Associated Brewing Company.
