Biographical/Historical note
Mabel Field Lacy spent 11 years as an educator in Hawaii during the 1920's-1930's. She worked mainly with blind, deaf and other handicapped children. The daughter of Dr. George T. Field and Estella Consaul Field, Mabel was born in 1882 in Chase, Michigan. She married Plato R. Lacy in 1901. He died in a fire five years later. They had three children: Estelle, William and Volney.
Biographical/Historical note
Estelle Lacy Coakley followed in her mother's footsteps by becoming a special education teacher. She worked at Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton, Mass. Her cousin, Lois Field, daughter of Mabel's brother George, took up the same profession. She became principal of Evans School in Denver, Colorado, specializing in the education of deaf and blind youngsters. In their later years, Estelle and Lois lived together in Evergreen, Colo.
