Biographical/Historical note

The Repatriados Oral History Committee, chaired by Elena Herrada, was organized in 1997 to gather information and histories on the Detroit Mexican community, namely the stories of those who suffered the fate of repatriation. The committee, comprised of descendants or relatives of repatriados, met with family members and elders of the Mexican community to document the history of repatriation in Detroit during the years of 1929 through 1939. In November of 2000, the committee received a grant from Detroit 300 in celebration of Detroit's 300`h birthday. The grant permitted the committee to finish their research and oral histories, and to subsequently create the documentary, Los Repatriados: Exiles from the Promised Land. The documentary was first presented at Ste Anne's Church, the preeminent church in Detroit's Mexican Community, in June of 2001. A second showing of the documentary coupled with a panel discussion occurred at the Detroit Institute of Arts in October of the same year. Subsequent screenings and lectures followed, including a program in San Luis Potosi, Mexico in June of 2004.
