- This collection of diaries, written from the age of 11 through age 74, documents the life of Maree Welch Baxter, of Coldwater and Detroit. Also included is a DVD, "Maree's diary, 1909-1944".
Biographical/Historical note
In 1904 John Welch gave his daughter Maree Fegles Welch a school copybook as a gift for her eleventh birthday to use as a diary. The diaries from 1904 to 1914 consist primarily of copybooks and, in a number of cases, just scraps of paper. The records from 1917 to 1929 were primarily in form of letters from Maree to her daughter, Betty. Maree began keeping a bound diary in 1930, and the numbering of the diaries was discontinued. From 1930 until 1941 her diary served primarily as an appointment book and a record of their supper menus. In 1942 the entries began to be a record of her daily activities and her thoughts about them. Bound diaries were used from 1930 until 1958.
