- This collection contains mainly city reports, information on Carpenters Local 19 Credit Union, and reference letters. Autograph letters of two Michigan governors are included: John B. Swainson and William B. Milliken.
Biographical/Historical note
Detroit City Councilman Jack Kelley was educated in Detroit, receiving his Bachelor of Arts and J.D. from the University of Detroit. He worked as Alpena City Attorney and Alpena County Supervisor, and served as Michigan Attorney General for sixteen years. He was also law professor at Cooley Law School. Touted as "a hard-nosed labor leader" by the press, Kelley was vice-president of Carpenters Local 19 Credit Union and served as deputy commissioner of Detroit's Buildings and Safety Department for twelve years. He ran for city council four times before gaining office in 1974, and remained on the council until 1993. He died at the age of 77 on May 14, 2003
