Biographical/Historical note

Born around 1872 in Detroit to Charles and Tillie Bradshaw Swales, Grace B. Swales married Herman Rolshoven in 1886. He was the son of Frederick, a Detroit jeweler and diamond merchant, and Teresa Rolshoven. Herman went into the jewelry business with his father, joining the family firm of F. Rolshoven & Company, located on Woodward Avenue in Detroit.

Papers of Grace Swales Rolshoven include materials on her sister Tilla Swales; her brother Charles; her mother, Tillie Bradshaw Swales; her husband Herman Rolshoven and his brother, Julius, a Detroit artist.
