- Papers contain genealogical research and family histories of the Powell, Wotring, Crane, McGarvah and other families. The oldest item in the collection is a marriage certificate from 1885 (Box 4:14). A photograph of Dr. Powell with President Gerald Ford may be found in Box 11:9.
Biographical/Historical note
Harold Frederic Powell was born on March 25, 1912 in Durand, Michigan, son of Walter and Mildred Wotring Powell. He received his bachelor's degree from Albion College in 1935 and his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1950. He worked as a psychologist for the Detroit Public Schools from 1938 to 1946, and taught Educational Psychology at Wayne State University for twenty-six years. His interests in genealogy were vast. He served as president of the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research and the Huguenot Society of Michigan, vice-president of the International Society for British Genealogy andamp; Family History and was Historian-General for the National Huguenot Society. Dr. Powell married Jean McGarvah, daughter of Joseph Andrew and Ethel Mae Thompson McGarvah. Jean died in 1983 and Dr. Powell married Ruth Burr Stevens a year later. Dr. Harold F. Powell died in Palm Beach, Florida on October 25, 2000.
