Biographical/Historical note
Polish American civic organization promoting a better community; established 1923; membership opened to professional and businessmen of Polish descent.,The West Side Merchants League, Inc. was organized on October 1, 1923 for the purpose of "making the western section of Greater Detroit as desirable. . . for residence and business purposes; to promote safety, health education and recreation in the community; and to endorse good government." Membership is available to Americans of Polish descent, over 21 years old, of good character and proposed by two members and approved by 75% of the members present at a meeting. Members are required to attend at least three meetings during the year. Meetings are held the first Monday of each month (except July and August), which is not a legal holiday. Many activities for charitable fund raising are promoted to benefit various causes: profits from golf, bowling or card tournaments, picnics, cruises, banquets, parties, etc. They arrange activities to include wives and children, especially during the summer and at Halloween and Christmas. They also support political candidates who represent their ideals of good government. At one time it was headquartered in the Warsaw Cafe, at 3830 35th Street, until the building was razed. It rents a club room at the Congress Inn, 12800 Michigan Avenue, in Dearborn. (from Benedict Markowski)
