Biographical/Historical note
On a national level, the Free Sons of Israel were founded in New York City on January 18, 1848. The immediate purpose in its organization by nine Jewish men was to remove from the Charter of the city of New York restrictions against the consecration of grounds for burial purposes in order to allow for a Jewish cemetery. Its early motto was "Friendship, Love and Truth." Provisions were soon made for sick benefits and burial ground privileges. Death benefits were established in 1871. In 1920, it was decided to admit non participating or "social" members in order to permit more youth to participate. Through the years, it has supported hospitals, nursing homes, charities, etc. In Detroit, Montefiore Lodge No. 12 was established on Dec. 4, 1864 and was open only to Jews. Its purpose, as revealed in its original Article #3 was "to relieve the members in case of sickness and to aid and assist the widows and orphans of the Lodge and in case of decease of a member of the Lodge or any of his family.., to give them decent burial upon the burying grounds of the corporation. Shortly after its founding, the Lodge purchased burial ground at Mack Road and Mt. Elliott in Hamtramck. (blue index cards)
