Biographical/Historical note

Organized in 1895, the Woman's Research Club of Detroit became affiliated with the General Federation of Women's Clubs three years later. Meetings were held from October to May each year: originally held once a week, by the 1950s they were held twice a month.

The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) is an international women's organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. In 1898, the year the Woman's Research Club of Detroit became federated, the GFWC began a program to eliminate child labor in the United States. By 1901, the U.S. Congress chartered the GFWC and designated that the Federation be headquartered in Washington DC, where it remains to this day.

On the afternoon of February 25, 1895, an adjunct society of the Woman's Research Club was organized to meet on Monday afternoons. It was known as the "Trianon", and its purpose was a reading circle for a course of study in French history, "a subject of interest to all." Records of the Trianon may be found in Box 1:4.
