Biographical/Historical note

Hazel Pingree Mills was the daughter of Detroit Mayor Hazen S. Pingree. She was married twice: first to Sherman L. Depew. They had two daughters, Frances and Valerie; second to Wilson Mills, who had a son, William J., from his first wife, Elizabeth. William was killed during World War II, and this collection includes the many condolence letters received after his death.

Scope and Contents note

Mrs. Mills' papers contain many of Mayor Pingree's letters, 1893-1894. The collection also features newspaper articles and personal papers of Mrs. Mills, material on the Detroit Historical Society and a photostat copy of the John Gilbert Diary.

Series III: William J. Mills 

General note

William J. Mills, step-son of Hazel Mills, was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy when his plane was shot down and he was killed instantly in 1944. There are some of his letters here, but mostly this section concerns his death, with memorials, obituaries and condolence letters to his wife, Shirley, and his parents.
