Biographical/Historical note

Edward snow was born in Ohio in 1820. He graduated with honors from Grand River Institute in 1842, fully supporting himself while doing so. Initially he took an interest in surveying, but an experience caring for a sick friend turned his attention toward medicine. He received his medical degree from western Reserve College in Cleveland in 1847. He then briefly practiced in Plymouth, Michigan before settling in Dearborn in 1849. He became Acting Assistant surgeon at the Detroit Arsenal there, where he served for a year. In 1852 he was reinstated by Jefferson Davis, then secretary of war, and served until the closure of the Arsenal in the mid-1870's. During the Civil war he cared for families of volunteers without charge. Dr. Snow was a founding member of the first and second Wayne County Medical societies, the first Detroit Medical society, and the Michigan Medical Society, as well as a member of the American Medical Association. He was a careful businessman and managed to amass a large fortune. Dr. Snow died of apoplexy in 1892.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists primarily of deeds and tax receipts of properties owned by Dr. Edward Sparrow Snow and his family, chiefly in Wayne County (Michigan) but also including some properties in Bay and Arenac counties. It also contains correspondence and notes on these properties, as well as other receipts, bills, purchase records, and photographs of Detroit.
