Born in Salisbury, N.H., Jan. 18, 1782; Graduated from Dartmouth Coll., 1801; stud. law & was adm. to the bar, Mar. 1805; began practice in Boscaven, N.H.; moved to Portsmouth,1807; member of. U.S. Congress, Mar. 4, 1813-Mar. 3, 1817; & Mar. 4, 1823- Mar. 3, 1827; U.S.Senator, Mar. 4, 1827 - Feb. 22, 1841; Secretary of State, Mar. 1841 - May 9, 1843; U.S. Senator, Mar. 1845 - July 22, 1850; Secretary of State, July 22,1850 - his death,in Marshfield, Mass., Oct. 24, 1852.
