Biographical/Historical note
In 1921 the University of Detroit, under the direction of Father John McNichols, selected land at Livernois and Six Mile Road as the site of the expanded University of Detroit campus. Properties in the area were bought by developers, subdivided into tracts and lots and put up for sale to the general public. Originally, the University District was part of the largest tract in the area. The District was known then and is still referred to by some as "The Golf Club District." Most of the homes in the area were built during the years from 1925-30 and 1937-41. During these years construction technology was highly developed and labor and material costs were relatively low. In 1991, the University District remains one of the city's more stable communities. It is often cited as a model for racially balanced neighborhoods. The community has an abundance of attorneys, physicians, educators, homemakers, city officials, and executives living within the 50 square block area. The University District Community Association Papers consist of nine boxes and one large manuscript folder. The Papers contain minutes, membership lists, correspondence, newsletters, records on a variety of subjects of neighborhood concern, newspaper clippings, maps, and photographs. See the following pages for an inventory of the collection.
