Abstract
The collection contains legal and personal papers of John Prentis. It also includes considerable family history, especially concerning the activities of its members in the American Revolution, documents concerning inventions and concerning copper mining investments in the Upper Peninsula. Included also are the papers of George H. Prentis, who was Wayne County Circuit Court Commissioner in 1864.

Biographical/Historical note

The son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Shapley) Prentis, John Prentis was born in 1792, probably in Richmond, Virginia, where his father had gone from New London, Connecticut after the American Revolution. Prentis came to Monroe, Michigan about 1832, and in 1843 to Detroit. John never married. He was a lawyer, and dabbled in inventions. He was admitted to the bar at Detroit in October 1842. In the 1840s he became interested in Lake Superior mining speculation. John Prentis died in 1858. (from Burton, City of Detroit ,v.Ill, p.54) (blue index cards)
