Biographical/Historical note

Henry Warren Hicks was born in Genesee County, N.Y. on Nov. 21, 1837, and came to Mich. with his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hicks, of Highland, at the age of five. He entered the ministry in the Methodist Protestant Church in 1858, and transferred to the Methodist Episcopal Church ten years later, serving various charges in the Detroit Conference for more than fifty years. In 1859 he and Ellen A. Gilbert, of Owosso, married. Their two sons were Gilbert H. Hicks, a botanist in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Frederick C. Hicks, professor of economics and president of the University of Cincinnati.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains papers relating to the Methodist church in the 19th century, the life of a Methodist minster, and his family. The 4,000 letters give a glimpse of the hardships of ministering to a scattered charge in rural mid-western America.
