Biographical/Historical note
Prominent in Jackson county politics and civic affairs, over the years the DeLand family received military and civilian appointments from Governor Lewis Cass, William Woodbridge, and President Andrew Johnson. An ardent abolitionist and friend of Horace Greeley, William R. DeLand help slaves escape to freedom, his home serving as a station on the Underground railroad. William founded the city of Jackson, served as a judge, and established the First Congregational Church in Jackson, Mich. He and his sons Charles and James, owned and operated a Jackson newspaper called the American Citizen. The DeLand family's editorial policy was anti-slavery and promoted Republican party politics. In the Civil War Charles and James both joined and fought with the First Michigan Sharpshooters Regiment. Charles finished the Civil War with a rank of Brevet Brigadier General and James with a rank of Brevet Major. Gertrude, the daughter of James S. Deland, married Stephen Michael Cotter and lived in Detroit. She was an avid collector of family history and active in numerous clubs: the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research, the Historic Memorials Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
