Biographical/Historical note

Son of Simon and Sarah (Marston) Dearborn, born in Hampton, New Hampshire, February 23, 1751. Became a physician; fought at Bunker Hill; taken prisoner while on Arnold expedition to Quebec; was exchanged and fought throughout revolution, after which he settled in Kennebec County, Maine was in Congress, 1793-1797; in 1801 Jefferson appointed him Secretary of War. 1809 resigned to become collector of port of Boston, January, 1812, Major General, U.S.A. His incompetence caused havoc in Lake regions. Honorably discharged June 15, 1815. In 1822 went as minister to Portugal. Married three times: Mary Bartlett, 1771: Dorcas Osgood Marble, 1780: Sarah Bowdoin, 1813. Died, June 6, 1829. (Dict. Am. Biog.) (Blue index cards)
